Playing style

I like to make early imbalances. With Black, the Scandinavian and Alekhine's Defence are my main openings against 1. e4. Against 1. d4, it varies! With White, I play sidelines, whether it's on the first move (1. Nc3) or later down the line.

The Qd6 Scandinavian · coming soon on Chessable

A full repertoire against 1.e4, built around a line so rare your opponent will likely be seeing it for the first time: 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.Nc3 Qd6 4.d4 Nf6 5.Nf3 g6!? .

Kramnik played it almost exclusively at the 2009 World Blitz Championship. Erigaisi used it twice against grandmasters in 2024. This is my own active repertoire, explained succintly and backed by fresh engine analysis.

Off-the-board

I organise and arbitrate tournaments under AlphaChess, including the UK's first chess "triathlon". Away from the board, I play piano, I'm learning electric guitar, and I'd rather be hiking or swimming outdoors than doing almost anything else.

Half English, half Chinese, and I speak some Mandarin. Recently read Camus' L'étranger and Naomi Klein's No Logo, both of which I really liked. Two of my favourite chess books: The Complete Chess Swindler by Smerdon, and Amateur to IM by the late GM Jonathan Hawkins, who was instrumental to my chess progress during the pandemic.

"Chess tourist"

I've been lucky enough to go abroad to play on multiple occasions. I particularly loved playing in Tallinn, Paris, and Rhodes.
